Hostage to their belief?

Hey ya'll.

Bein' part Lebanese I naturally take a look-see here and there about how things is a goin' in the Near East.

Ya''ll hear about the lady Syrian (almost Lebanese) psychologist who had an interview on Al-jezeera and now is gettin' ugly death threats ? She lives in California, is Muslim and jes' told it like it is for Isalm:

"I believe our people are hostages to our own beliefs and teachings," said Dr. Wafa Sultan.

Hmmn...why is that? Here's more frrom the NYT:

Dr. Sultan said the world was not witnessing a clash of religions or cultures, but a battle between modernity and barbarism, a battle that the forces of violent, reactionary Islam are destined to lose.

Now the good thang is that the four moderate Muslims in the world are thanking her for speaking out. But the rest who practice the "religion of peace" is a wailing and calling for her demise.

But here's the thang that makes such good sense:

"Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them."

This here is a sensible woman, don't 'cha think?

On Al-Jezeera she asked, "Why does a young Muslim man, in the prime of life, with a full life ahead, go and blow himself up?" she asked. "In our countries, religion is the sole source of education and is the only spring from which that terrorist drank until his thirst was quenched."

Once a devout Muslim, she was a student at the University of Aleppo when the Muslim Brotherhood burst into the classroom shooting the professor dead while screaming "God is great" Today she says Islam is a, "clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality."

Let's hope more like Dr. Sultan will speak up--soon.

I've noted before, but it bears repeating: All cultures are not equal. Multiculturalism is a sham becasue it assumes all cultures are equal, and they jes' ain't sweet pets. None are perfect, but ours is the least worst--let's defend it.

I would go as far as to say, any society based on adherence to will of somebody elses imaginary friend, is pretty much backwards and needs to grow up.

i'm not so sure ours is the "least worst." i suspect there may be several in that catgegory. and there may be a culture that is better i don't know enough to know for sure....but know that i don't know enough about other cultures to claim mine is the best or the least worst just because it is mine and what i am most familiar with.

how many cultures have you studied? what is your definition of culture?

sorry Aunty Belle - but it seems a sweeping generalization to me.

I'm on my way now to Al Jazeera - want to read the interview - this woman sounds interesting.

Aunty Belle - back again I am, afer listening to Wafa Sultan.
I also read a commentary about her from a Muslim scholar, who in some ways agreed with her, but also wanted to remind her and others that the majority of Muslims are NOT burning anything nor storming embassies.

She seems to be quite well-spoken. I love this quote from Sultan, as she addresses the Muslim cleric also in the clip:
"Brother, you can believe in stones as long as you don't throw them at me."

I watched the video on MEMRI TV. (http//:www.memritv.org) One critic did state that this organization is run by "Jewish propagandists" - but I do not know if that is true - though certainly, the clip was edited and did not include the entire discussion, nor most, I think, of what the Muslim cleric had to say. But the "about" section of the site looked straight up to me.

Hey ya'll, SO SO happy to have you all sit a spell!

my gracious but it's been quite a few days...what with company an' all...jes' wish each of you coulda been here--you'd have really LOVED my visitor...jes' a darlin' thang bout your'n ages.

Now about this here post on Islam--yes Hail-pig, that is a fine little film--it'll get'cha thinkin, huh?

Contessa--did you get than computer machine all fixed up, honey? Mah back is on drugs--I am walkin' fine--very fine--all goes to show that no wonder steroids is a performace enhancing drug!! But next week I have to get one of those epidurals--first of three--see iffin' we can put of surgery for another little spell...

Now Rev'rend, they's "imaginary" and then they's the Real Thang. But I'd agree on them imaginary ones. THis is one angle of view: IF you could hold it all in your own head, that'd be a god too small to be a true God...so we cain't really expect to grasp it all, but, that doan mean it ain't there jes' because we cain't understand, you know. But Islam's Allah is in Mohammed's imagination--very convenient too....

Bird, your are right, we ought not say our culture is least worst jes' becasue it is *ours*--that's not a good reason since it ain't based on truth. But ours (western civ--or what's left of it) truly verification isthat folks is fleeing to us for freedom. That is for political and economic freedom. Plus the standards that --more or less-- try to get everyone educated so they's able to do as much as possible for they selves..not that we got it perfect, jes' better'n most.

I have studied other cultures pretty wing-ed one. Both contemporary and historical. (You'd be surprised how far-flung the Poark Rind bidness can be so as to send Uncle and me here and there in thos ole' world)

One definition of healthy culture is that system of belief and practice that permits the greatest creativity and innovation in the most areas of human organization (social, political educational, etc.), and that respects it's citizens. Of course, I'd add that it's language ought to have layers of specificity, its moral structure needs to be self-executing with the least amount of forced compliance. No culture is perfect, hence the "least worst" disclaimer.

So glad you seen the video clip, sweet creature of the air -what I find fascinatin' is that Dr. Sultan is able to address clerics and scholars and make herself understood in a manner that forces them to have a thoughtful response (well, some of them have knee jerk hatred response)--this is the dialog we need within Islam.

But now, Bird, why do you fear Christian fundamentalism? And what is the definition of fundamentalism?

So pleased to see you all...do come again.

Aunty Belle.
