Keepin' Perspective

This "Letter of Apology" was written by
Lieutenant General Chuck Pitman,
US Marine Corps, Retired:

For good and ill, the Iraqi prisoner abuse mess will remain an issue. On the one hand, right thinking Americans will abhor the stupidity of the actions while on the other hand, political glee will take control and fashion this minor event into some modern day massacre.

I humbly offer my opinion here:

I am sorry that the last seven times we Americans took up arms and sacrificed the blood of our youth, it was in the defense of Muslims (Bosnia, Kosovo, Gulf War 1, Kuwait, etc.).

I am sorry that no such call for an apology upon the extremists came after 9/11.

I am sorry that all of the murderers on 9/11 were Islamic Arabs.

I am sorry that most Arabs and Muslims have to live in squalor under savage dictatorships.

I am sorry that their leaders squander their wealth.

I am sorry that their governments breed hate for the US in their religious schools, mosques, and government-controlled media.

I am sorry that Yassar Arafat was kicked out of every Arab country and high-jacked the Palestinian "cause."

I am sorry that no other Arab country will take in or offer more than a token amount of financial help to those same Palestinians.

I am sorry that the U.S.A. has to step in and be the biggest financial supporter of poverty stricken Arabs while the insanely wealthy Arabs blame the USA for all their problems.

I am sorry that our own left wing, our media, and our own brainwashed masses do not understand any of this (from the misleading vocal elements of our society like radical professors, CNN and the NY TIMES).

I am sorry the United Nations scammed the poor people of Iraq out of the "food for oil" money so they could! get rich while the common folk suffered.

I am sorry that some Arab governments pay the families of homicide bombers upon their death.

I am sorry that those same bombers are brainwashed thinking they will receive 72 virgins in "paradise."

I am sorry that the homicide bombers think pregnant w omen, babies, children, the elderly and other noncombatant civilians are legitimate targets.

I am sorry that our troops die to free more Arabs from the gang rape rooms and the filling of mass graves of dissidents of their own making.

I am sorry that Muslim extremists have killed more Arabs than any other group.

I am sorry that foreign trained terrorists are trying to seize control of Iraq and return it to a terrorist state.

I am sorry we don't drop a few dozen Daisy cutters on Fallujah.

I am sorry every time terrorists hide they find a convenient "Holy Site."

I am sorry they didn't apologize for driving a jet into the World Trade Center that collapsed and severely damaged Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church - one of our Holy Sites.

I am sorry they didn't apologize for flight 93 and 175, the USS Cole, the embassy bombings, the murders and beheadings of Nick Berg and Daniel Pearl, etc....etc!

I am sorry Michael Moore is American; he could feed a medium sized village in Africa.

America will get past this latest absurdity. We will punish t hose responsible because that is what we do.

We hang out our dirty laundry for the entire world to see. We move on. That's one of the reasons we are hated so much. We don't hide this stuff like all those Arab countries that are now demanding an apology.

Deep down inside, when most Americans saw this reported in the news, we were like - so what? We lost hundreds and made fun of a few prisoners. Sure, it was wrong, sure, it dramatically hurts our cause, but until captured we were trying to kill these same prisoners. Now we're supposed to wring our hands because a few were humiliated?

Our compassion is tempered with the vivid memories of our own people killed, mutilated and burnt amongst a joyous crowd of celebrating Fallujahans.

If you want an apology from this American, you're going to have a long wait! You have a better chance of finding those seventy-two virgins.

Chuck Pitman

Lieutenant General, USMC

Aunty Belle adds:

I'se sorry we flew seven Iraqui men to Houston where we fitted them with prosthetic hands after Saddam had chopped offtheir right hands to make a political statement.

I'se sorry the US MSM worries about Abu G rather than report the life savin' efforts of our troops which outweigh deaths or "execess" a zillion to one--

I'se sorry I ain't the Sec of Def...so Lt General Pitman would not need to make this statement.

I'se sorry that smug and spoiled critics of US efforts cain't have a preview of the world under Islam without the rest of us having to be maimed and beheaded...but the good always pay the price for the cowards, the corrupt, the snivelin' idealists who want somethin' fer nothin'. Ya' wanna live in freedom? Somebody will have to insure that freedom. Support the troops, support the effort in Iraq and quit aidin' terorists PR war, and we'll get this over a lot sooner.

Islam, like the communist party, is a totalitarian system where the scum always rises to the top.

Mohammedanism, like Stalinism, seems to bring forth the worst sort of political leaders - vain, hateful, despotic, deceitful, sadistic, corrupt, greedy and abusive manipulators.

Pretty much like Old Mo and Joe themselves, I suppose.

well, this is all fine and well, but the letter is not authentic.

check out:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/pitman.asp

which documents this letter as a cyberspace hoax and provides a link to the original letter and its author.

additional links i found in my cursory search revealed the letter attritubted without citation by various posters, i.e. - they say it's from pittman, but provide no documentation.

why are you sorry we helped those iraqi men? theorectically aren't our troops in iraq fighting for the iraqis?

Aunty Belle said...

Hey winged one---congratulations on yer master's !Hoo-whee! Happy ter see you back "on task".

As for the letter and snopes--Bird, honey--the attribution of the letter to Pitman is "false" since he only passed it along--real time title and author, Blogfolks, is:

"My Apology to the Arab World," penned by Dr. Mike S. Adams, a professor of criminology at the University of North Carolina---but the points made are the points--not the author.

As fer mah bein' sorry we helped those Iraqi men--chile' thas' a bit of sarcasm---I guess that is one trouble wif web writin'--ya' cain;t hear tone of voice or see facial expressions...Of course I'se very PROUD that we helped the Iraqi's whose hands was chopped by Saddam, PROUD of the right fer women ter vote and to go ter school, etc.

Mah intent heah, is to note that FIRST, we accord to our troops the innocent until proven guilty standard of justice--not trial by CNN, and then to note that "civilians" who harbor terrorists are terrorists too.

Long message short: War is hideous, too bad it must be a recourse when all else fails; when war is the recourse, it is war, not democracy or ideology, and soldiers in action must make split second decisions
...give them the benefit of the doubt.

It amazes me that Bird can't see the apology for what it is,rather then for what it isn't,sad so very sad.

Howdy Stogie and Hail-Pig,

yep, kick-ass...but Stogie, the thang is, another one turns they bottom up afore I can git mah laig reared back fer another good swing!

Sweet Shoat, what we'uns gonna do? I tries so hard ter be reasonable...why is it that so few notice that known insurgents also died at Haditha? What does that tell ya??

Fact is, folks, IFFIN' the IED had not been tossed, the "civilians" would be alive today...what do these villagers think? That in a time of war ya' can harbor insurgents and keep your hands clean or yore heahd on ya shoulders?

Last thought: To all ya'll whose wringin' yore hands over Haditha, how come ya' ain't compared those Marines to Gen. Tecumesh Sherman?

Bird said...

nonetheless, when such a letter is attributed to a lt. colonel, it means something slightly different than such a letter penned by someone else, or even passed along by said colonel.

sad, so sad, that folks don't understand the meaning of credibility and attribution. it does indeed make a difference. proper attritubtion builds up a poster's ethos - the trust, or credibility others put in the poster's words. just basic communication skills really.

but don't you find it rather ironic that though many claim we should make muslims our enemies, our actual task (at least, the spin the bush administration currently puts on it) is to HELP muslims through our war effort in iraq? thus, when you extole us to support the war, we also must support muslims. bonafide iraqi muslims of course.

yet i thought all muslims were horrible and our enemy. at least, that's what i've understood from so many posts and comments in this place.

i guess the muslims who live in lands we occupy are ok. but then, how do you tell the difference between those muslims and the ones who are terrorizing and plotting the destruction of the West? Is there a difference?

Hellpig said...

you would probably find the later in your basement Bird, protecting his civil rights

Bird said...

pig,
i don't have a basement, but i could have sworn i saw a fellow with a turban and rather dashing beard (i think his name might have been achmed) creeping into my apartment during one the many parties i've had these past several days. i think he might be hiding under my bed. i go now to interrogate him and determine if he is worthy of the civil liberties afforded to us in this great country of ours. i will see if he is a good muslim, or a bad muslim - or - heavens forbid - a fellow citizen!

Stogie said...

Bird, I assume your last name is "Brain."

Let me spell it out simply so that even a liberal can understand.

Islam is an evil ideology that requires its adherents to kill people who don't believe in Islam. It is a very violent, oppressive and intolerant ideology that seeks to rule the world. It tried to do so centuries ago and gained (through military invasion and conquest) quite a lot of ground, even threatening to overrun Europe; they were finally stopped by a warrior named Charles Martel, at the gates of Vienna in 1683.

There are moderate Muslims, but there is no moderate Islam. Those who are moderate either do not really know their own holy books, or have chosen not to follow them. However, some of their offspring may feel differently and decide to be violent as required by Muhammad. This is what happened in London and almost happened in Canada last week, when home-grown Muslims were violent or were planning to be.

But you don't care about facts, hey Bird Brain? You care about feeling morally superior while assuming that your profound ignorance of the subject matter is enlightenment when in fact it is a form of suicide. You choose to not know the danger of Muslim immigration and infiltration, so you shut it out. You're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

as usual, your intellect prowess overpowers and impresses me pig - and now we have stogie joning in with equally intelligent commentary littered sweeping generalities, unsupported claims, and ad hominem attacks. seems like an epidemic in this place. and it also reminds me so much of claims made by fundamentalist muslims - who subscribe to the same kind of rhetorical strategies. another irony i suppose.

but once again, i see that constuctive,or even humorous yet intelligent and civilized debate is impossible in this space.

off to cleaner, clearer skies.

Love the post Aunty...the comments got a little intense, eh?

Aunty Belle said...

OH! My my....where ter begin??

Bird, Winged One...listen--we'uns don't have to over-complicate the situation. Please, now, let's try to see what the other is really saying, K?

Of course we must help the Iraqis as part our effort to bring freedom, introduce the rule of law, etc. Aunty B is not of the either/or mindset, but the both/and mindset--we can bring freedom and modest improvement to rule of law in Middle East AND accomplish the military goals.

This in no way lessens or mitgates the need for a strong military policy that puts our own troops FIRST, and insures the protections of the US law for each and every soldier or personnel.

All Muslims ain't terrorists, but as Stogie points out, those who ain't violent in pursuit of conquest are either not following the Qu'ran or are ignorant of its precepts.

We have a nigh unto impossible task--to create in the heart of Islam an model fer rule of law that respects Kurds, Shia, Sunni, Chhristian, atheists, etc. as equal before the law. Iffin' we can set up such a model, then some aspects of Islam will have to be moderated to relfect 21st century realities.

We have to attempt this--the world is in a defacto Islamic/Western Civ. cold war stance. For the sake of Western conscience, we must first make a real, true and concerted effort to introduce Muslims to a "Third Way" that has the chance to create in their societies the more just economic, educational, and social-professional policies.

Such policies (it is hoped) will lead Islam to realise that its people need not be sand-poor, oppressed and illiterate in order fer their religious beliefs to be their foundation.

IF such can be demonstated, the Muslims can have legitimate hope of participating in the global economic and political areans with a more even footing, with earned respect...in short, how to balance the tenets of Islam with the realities of the modern world.

But I am not optimistic, Bird Jewel of the Air.

Stogie and HAil-Pig make crucial points. Isalm carries within its precepts a recipie for a world at war--their requirement of conquest could be intellectualized, internalised as personal conquest of sin: greed, lying, revenge... but instead is used by the politicos fer personal gain KNOWING that it victimizes their own people even as it threatens the West.

The history of Islam is not encouraging. Stogie illustrates the point with the reference to Europe
--though it is far worse that Stogie outlined.

Briefly;
700s
Islam invades Christian and Jewish lands in the Near East. The carnage shocks and subdues the people--many flee to Spain, Africa, Europe.

The conquest reaches into Turkey and the Caucus, parts of what is now Eastern Europe. By 720, most of Spain is writhes under the Saracen boot.

Charles Martel--The Hammer- managed to repluse the Saracens (Moors) at Poitiers (France) in 732, his grandson Charlemagne would have to repeat the effort 50 years later in the Pyrenees, on the border of France and Spain. (Famous ballad "Song of Roland.").

Isabella of Spain and her king, Ferdinand, finally accomplished the recovery of Iberia--700 YEARS after the Moors invaded. Meanwhile, the Islamic fleets fought against Ventian,Genovese and other European city-states until the Battle of Lepanto (1571) when the great Don Juan managed to wrest a temporary victory and save Europe yet again...and still they came.

Osama himself knows this history. Osama told the world that 9-11 was "unfinished business" , and more han one commentator notes that in 1683 the Polish King, Sobieski, came to the rescue of Europe once again-- to pry it loose from the grip of Islam
--the the famous "Gates of Vienna" battle. The date was Septemebr 11th. The next day, 12th, the victory was apparent for all the world to see. This Christian victory brought to an end 300 + years of struggle against the invasion of Chrisitan nations by Ottoman Empire.

I did'nt touch on the Crusades--while some knights were weak and lackin' in virtue, for the most part the Crusades were crucial to history--Islam was opressing Chhristians and Jews in their home nations--how can anyone claim that the Crusades were "against" Islam when it was "for" delivery of the oppressed?

The final point: We are NOT in a "war" with Arabs (am part Arab myself, Lebanese) or any people based on ethnicty or land of origin. We battle Islam. The distinction is important, BIrd, because the normal boundaries of war have been erased--it is not as if you can diplomatically address Islam as you would a nation. There are no borders, no authority for all of Isalm..thus the typical tactics of sanction, diplomacy, or foreign aid no longer serve---the "radicals" are not answerable to the law of a nation, to a king or a despot, they are cells loosed on the entire world.

A'Course, Aunty Belle would say that from a mystical sense, this is an ancient argument between half-brothers:

"The Assyrian came down like a wolf on the fold
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold
And the sheen of their spears was like stars on the sea
When the blue wave rolls nightly on deep Galilee. "

Hellpig said...

I have a new topic for you AB

Bloggosphere pedophilia

Castration or labotomy ?

or if your a lib rehabilitation

Bird said...

wrong again hellpig.(though i know perfectly well you were baiting me - what the heck - i'm in a generous mood - i'll take the bait.)

current scientifc research tells us that you cannot rehabilitate a pedophile. nonetheless, i have a certain amount of compassion for those poor souls - because we also know that most pedophiles were victims themselves. and maybe some day, we'll actually come up with a way to effectively rehabilitate pedophiles. until then, i don't want any of 'em living around children, working with children, etc.

however, castration seems a bit severe - given that (if what i've read is correct) you can subdue the urge through medication. the problem is of course, as with some folks who are bi-polar or psychophrenic (i've not spelled that correctly at all) - they won't always take the meds. so you need to monitor these folks - and our current system doesn't allow for effective monitoring. (a funding issue - and this isn't about helping the pedophiles per se - but about keeping children safe. pedophiles are helped as a consequence of keeping children safe.)

and if we "debate" pedophiles, we should discuss the response of the Catholic Church to its own internal pedophile problem.

you have a very skewed perspective of liberals, pig. not all liberals are the same - there is no one size fits all.

have you been to daydreamer of oz's blog? some discussion of pedophiles there. (though daydreamer is most definately NOT a liberal - so you don't need to call her names.)

hey - did anybody out there remember that it was an election day?

Bird said...

http://daydreamerofoz.blogspot.com/

Hellpig said...

First off it is Daydreamer and I who are working together on this, she requested me personally to assist her,and we don't give a rats ass about rehabilitation, that is for the weak minded,we are about total exposure and humiliation, and I resent the idea that I would not talk nice to OZ,I only talk nasty to those who are deserving of my tongue, you are more then happy to join the fray on this one Bird,we will be up and running shortly,I have a pre-posting at my traitors blog site but we are in collaboration on "Absolute Zero" which OZ will have up soon.

And I don't bait people, the facts are in Libs prefer the catch and release, where I myself find this method useless

Aunty Belle said...

Gag!! Pedophilia...Chickens. I'se fer whatever it takes to protect the kids--so I'd castrate on second offense. They won't take their meds, Bird...ya already noted that. Castration seems extreme--but as Bird done said, many peds were also molested thus SOMEhow we must stop the cycle.

As fer the Catholic Church--aha! Well Bird, Aunty is orthodox--that is, believes Catholics are not conscripted into the Church, so IF you wanna be Catholic, then be one and leave off the redesignin' ter suit ya' own sins. This means, I'se real real happy ter see the American bishops squirm under the scandal, on account of the fact they brought this own they ownselves. IN 1964 the Church issued a directive NOT to ordain or admit to seminary a man of confused orientation. The Am bishops think more like American libs than like Catholics (Some notable exceptions)and they thought thye could defy Rome and be "compassisonate" and "tolerant"
....ya' see whar that got'em. SO the US bishops derserved a bloody nose--I'de heartsick fer the kids though.

Note I done made it clear that we are talking here of EBOPHILIA--not pedophilia. THis distinction is important to understand the nature of the problem--homosexuality , not pedohilia was the source of the abuse in the US Catholic CHurch --these cases were 98% boys over the age of 10.

Statistically, homosexuals are more likely to be pedohiles than heterosexuals , especially when the ebophiliacs are counted.

NOTE that dang few girls were victims of these homosexual priests--this is/was a homosexual problem. Ebophlia is sexual abuse of minors who are pubertal or older. THus, abuse of a 14 year old is abuse of a minor, but with sexual developemnt not a child as yet undeveloped.

Though I should point out that the % of abuse cases in the Church is less than any other demonination, less that coaches and teachers and boy scout leaders--the CHurch has the best record--check Philip JEnkins (Not Catholic) a prof at U of Penn who has done an exhaustive study. The case numbers reported in the media are ALL the cases reported since 1960...and reported is not the equivilent of confirmed since in many cases the priest accused was dead and could not respond.

However ONE child is too many, and Aunty Belle will tell ya' that this scandal is a cryin' shame, but will serve to rid the dang US of fellow travelers--return to orthodoxy and apply the Vatican's diretives.

Sweet Shoat--lemme stroll over to OZ and see wha's up over theah.

Aunty Belle said...

OK,I done been to OZ and read up on the situation...Aunty B says, "told ya". Euorpe has been givin' in so long now, why be surprized that a pedophilia politcal party is formed yto see kthe "Rights" of the demented?

The natural outgrowth of "gay rights" is pedophile rights or polygamy rights or bestiality rights.

Looky folks---whe ya give in to deviancy, it begets more deviancy--deveiancy already means an inability to control oneself, and once one serious line is crossed, why stop?

There are no foriegn armies of Islam occupying any wester nations. No permanent Islamic Military presence based in any western country.
There are no Islamic Corporations bleeding western resources from behind fortified Islamic military forces. No Islamic Nation has fought a major war, enemy casualties in the hundreds of thousands, every 11 years for the last Century. Religion of Peace? No. Not possible from a Region and Culture in Pieces.
Yeah, I think
islam should notexist. Niether should any other religion.I am sick of hearing about people killing other people because they think their imaginary friend wants them to.
Get rid of all Religions if you can. Won't change much in the situation you are so oblivious to yet outspoken nonetheless. Action/reaction violence will continue unabated until we all realise that before we try to remove the mote from another's eye, we should get the beam out of our own. Fix yourself, fix your house, then, when you have done all that is needed here and you are free of sin, go help them.Don't fix them. Help them to fix themselves.
